Smart TV – rethink TV viewing

Analysts predict that over half of all flat-panel televisions shipped worldwide in 2014 will have network connectivity empowered to access content from the Internet.

With the onset of up-to-the-minute technologies, Smart TVs are on their way to our living rooms, offering everything from Internet connectivity and live video streaming to games and other ultramodern applications. One thing’s for certain — TV viewing is not what it used to be.

With the advent of space-age TV like Google TV consumers can search for anything on the Web, watch videos on YouTube, and watch movies and live broadcasts with movie-streaming sites and other social networking sites. Furthermore, Smart TV features include an advanced user interface or content discovery engine which permits viewers to discover and select content to watch — just like a PC browser but without any keyboard typing, and on one’s own giant flatpanel TV screen.

Smart TVs definitely have the potential for growth in the market. Analysts predict that by the year 2014, 54% of all flatpanel TVs shipped worldwide will already be equipped with network connectivity so viewers can have unlimited access to the Internet. In the US alone, the forecast is that 40% of American homes will have at least one TV set connected to the Internet by 2015.

But flat-panel TVs are slowly taking over, and after that, one can assume that Smart TVs could become the standard in years to come. Channel surfing would be a definite thrill, because the whole world will be at one’s fingertips, literally. And, it’s just a matter of time before tech companies and the television manufacturers hit the right combination of software, hardware and content to open up the market.
